The Basics
A straight stairlift runs on a single, standard-length rail fitted to a staircase with no bends, curves or half-landings. Because the rail is cut to length from stock rather than manufactured bespoke, it is significantly cheaper and faster than a curved lift.
Most straight lifts can be surveyed and installed within days. The rail fixes to the stair treads, not the wall, so it suits almost any construction and can be removed cleanly later.
If your stairs turn a corner, have a half-landing, or narrow at any point, you will need a curved stairlift instead — a survey will confirm which you need.
What You Get
Obstruction sensors stop the lift if anything blocks the rail.
The seat rotates at the top so you step off away from the stairs.
Keeps working during a power cut and charges at the rail ends.
Seat, footrest and arms fold to keep the staircase clear.
Cost
Straight lifts are the most affordable type, but prices still vary between suppliers for the same specification. The main variables are the length of the staircase, whether you choose new or reconditioned, the warranty and servicing package, and any extras such as powered swivel seats or folding rails.
Because a straight rail is standard, this is the category where comparing quotes pays off most obviously — you are comparing near-identical products. See our prices guide for what to look for.

Yes. Removal is straightforward and leaves only small fixing holes in the stair treads.
That usually requires a curved lift, though some suppliers offer a straight rail that stops short of the turn. A survey will advise.
