The Basics
A stairlift is one of the most effective ways to stay in a home you love when stairs become difficult. The right one depends on three things: the shape of your staircase, who will be using it, and how long you need it for.
The single biggest factor in price is whether your staircase is straight or curved. A straight lift runs on a standard rail and can often be fitted within days. A curved lift needs a rail manufactured specifically for your stairs, which takes longer and costs considerably more.
There are also cheaper routes many people never hear about. Reconditioned models can cost far less than new while still carrying a warranty, and rental makes sense if the need is temporary — recovering from surgery, for example.
Peace of Mind
Keep using every floor rather than moving or living downstairs.
Seat belts, obstruction sensors and safe swivel seats as standard.
Move around your own home without needing help.
Straight lifts are often fitted within a few days of survey.

FAQs
Price depends mainly on whether your staircase is straight or curved, and whether you buy new, buy reconditioned or rent. Straight lifts are the cheapest; curved lifts need a bespoke rail and cost considerably more. Quotes for the same specification vary a lot between suppliers, which is exactly why comparing matters. See our prices page.
A straight stairlift can often be fitted in a couple of hours, sometimes within days of the survey. A curved stairlift needs its rail manufactured to fit your staircase, so it typically takes a few weeks from survey to installation.
No. Stairlifts fix to the treads of the staircase, not the wall, and reputable installers make good afterwards. When a lift is removed, the fixings leave only small holes in the treads.
You may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council, and VAT relief is available if you have a long-term illness or disability. Read our grants and funding guide.
Many suppliers offer rental, which suits temporary needs such as recovery after an operation. See stairlift rental.
