Rental & Hire
If the need is temporary — recovering from surgery, respite care or a short-term illness — renting a stairlift is usually far better value than buying one.

The Basics
With rental you pay an initial installation charge and then a regular fee for as long as you need the lift. When it is no longer needed, the supplier removes it. Servicing and repairs are normally included, because the supplier still owns the equipment.
Rental is most common on straight staircases, where standard rails make it easy for suppliers to install, remove and reuse the equipment. Curved rental exists but is less widely offered and costs more, because the rail is bespoke.
It is also often the fastest option. Suppliers keep rental stock ready to install, which matters when someone is coming out of hospital.
When It Makes Sense
After an operation, fall or hospital stay, where mobility should improve.
Short stays where a relative needs access upstairs.
Where comfort at home matters and the need is not long term.
Living with a lift before committing to a purchase.
Cost
Rental is cheaper up front but more expensive over time. As a rule of thumb, if you expect to need the lift for more than about a year, buying — particularly reconditioned — usually works out better value.
Ask suppliers for the installation charge, the ongoing fee, the minimum hire period, what happens if you need it longer than planned, and whether removal is included. Our renting vs buying guide works through the maths.
