Costs & Pricing

Stairlift Prices Explained

What you pay depends on your staircase, the model, and whether you buy new, buy reconditioned or rent. Here is what actually drives the price.

The Main Factor

Straight vs Curved

This is the biggest single variable. A straight stairlift uses a standard rail cut to length, so it sits at the affordable end. A curved stairlift needs a rail manufactured to the exact shape of your stairs, and that bespoke work typically multiplies the cost several times over.

If a supplier quotes you a curved lift at a straight-lift price, check carefully what is being proposed — it may stop short of a landing rather than following the full staircase.

What Changes the Price

Other Cost Factors

New vs Reconditioned

Refurbished units cost considerably less and still carry warranties.

Buy vs Rent

Rental suits temporary needs; buying is better value long term.

Warranty & Servicing

Longer warranties and service plans add to the up-front price.

Indoor vs Outdoor

Weatherproof outdoor lifts carry a premium over indoor models.

Reducing the Cost

Ways to Pay Less

  • Compare properly. Quotes for the same staircase vary widely between suppliers. This is the simplest saving available.
  • Consider reconditioned. A refurbished unit with a warranty can cost far less than new. See reconditioned stairlifts.
  • Check VAT relief. If you have a long-term illness or disability, the supply and installation may be zero-rated for VAT.
  • Check grants. A Disabled Facilities Grant from your council may contribute. See our funding guide.
  • Ask about ex-demo units. Suppliers sometimes discount display or short-term-hire models.

Comparing Fairly

What to Compare Beyond the Price

Ask every supplier for the same things in writing: the total installed price, what the warranty covers and for how long, whether servicing is included, the callout response time, and what removal would cost later.

A slightly higher quote with five years of servicing included can easily be better value than a cheaper one with a twelve-month warranty and paid callouts.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay VAT on a stairlift?

If the stairlift is for someone with a long-term illness or disability and is for personal use in their home, the supply and installation are usually zero-rated for VAT. Suppliers will provide a simple declaration form.

Are there grants available?

Possibly. A Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council is means-tested and depends on an assessed need. Some charities also help. See our grants guide.

Is finance available?

Many suppliers offer finance. Compare the total repayable, not just the monthly figure, and check whether the agreement is regulated.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Different suppliers use different manufacturers, margins, warranty terms and servicing packages. This is precisely why comparing several quotes is worth the few minutes it takes.
