Stairlift Maintenance and Servicing

A stairlift is a piece of machinery in daily use. Regular servicing keeps it safe, reliable and under warranty.

How Often Should It Be Serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend an annual service, and many warranties require one to stay valid. Lifts in heavy daily use, or outdoor lifts exposed to weather, may benefit from servicing more often.

A service typically covers the drive mechanism, safety sensors, seat belt, batteries, rail condition and general operation.

Batteries

Batteries are the most common cause of a stairlift failing. They typically last a few years and degrade gradually — a lift that slows down or beeps is often signalling battery decline rather than a serious fault.

Leaving the lift parked at a charging point when not in use prolongs battery life considerably.

Service Contracts

Many suppliers offer an annual contract covering the service visit and, sometimes, callouts and parts. Compare what is actually included: some cover labour only, leaving you to pay for parts.

Ask about callout response times too. If the user relies on the lift daily, a supplier who attends within 24 hours is worth more than one who takes a week.

Warning Signs

Unusual noise, slowing on the incline, intermittent stopping, or warning beeps all warrant a call to your supplier. Do not attempt repairs yourself — stairlifts carry weight and any error has real consequences.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do stairlifts last?

A well-maintained lift commonly lasts many years. Batteries and upholstery are replaced periodically; the mechanism itself is durable.

Is servicing included in the price?

Sometimes for an initial period, then chargeable. Confirm what is included and for how long before you buy.

Can any engineer service my lift?

Independent engineers exist, but using the supplier or manufacturer keeps warranties intact. Check before switching.

What if my supplier goes out of business?

Independent servicing companies cover most major brands. This is a reason to favour a well-known manufacturer.
